The opacity of the paint coating is another parameter from a series of decorative characteristics of coatings, which affects the other properties by a certain measure - color and degree of gloss. The opacity determines the uniformity and uniformity of the applied layer of paint and varnish material, which, when curing, has its own unique surface structure, thickness, volume, consistency, and so on.
This paint parameter depends, to a greater extent, on the nature of the application of the material, the chosen coloring technology, the paint consumption, the thickness of the created layer. The same qualities of paint that determine the hiding power of the paint even before applying the surface are limited by two criteria - the mass of the dry residue and the drying rate of the paint layer, that is, determining how much paint will remain on the surface after solvent evaporation and how the paint coating is transformed during drying.
In other words, if the hiding power of the paintwork is insufficient, then the remaining properties of the coating - color and degree of gloss - will be distorted, which means that the desired effect will not be achieved. The technology of applying each paint product provides a number of parameters according to which the paint should be transferred to the surface, providing optimal coverage for a particular paint.
And the quality of pretreatment, and the use of additional paint and varnish materials - primers and putties, all this determines the hiding power of the paint.
Returning to the technology of applying paint, it is necessary to take into account all the requirements for surface painting performed during cargo operations, and delivered by the specialists of the manufacturer. If one or another material consumption for a certain area is indicated on the paint jar, then this means that a decrease in consumption will affect the coverage, and an increase will affect the mechanical and rheological properties of the paint coating. Both of these options will lead to negative consequences that are not pursued by a person.
It is important to be able to determine the hiding power of paint in practice, since this parameter is absolutely necessary in the daily work of masters of different levels, designers, artists, decorators and other representatives of decorative art. The hiding power of the paint and varnish material is revealed as follows:
•A smear of paint is applied to the surface of an absolutely black color
•A smear of paint is applied to the surface of an absolutely white color
•A smear of paint is applied to the surface of the desired color
•The reflection intensity is compared (that is, the color saturation on different substrates), and if it is possible to measure the absolute intensity value, then the result for a black surface (lower value) should be divided by the result for a white surface (higher value), comparing with the result for the desired surface
•Measuring the thickness of the smear, its value is adjusted to the desired level (by diluting the paint most often).
